ANOTHER POW Wolf Trapping Order! Now Extended to December 21, 2018

Thank you to John for the tip. Yesterday, we [Reported] that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game closed hunting and trapping for the wolves on Prince of Wales on Tuesday, December 18th and now it has been extended to 11:59PM, December 21st.

EXPLANATION: This emergency order closes the state resident and nonresident wolf trapping and hunting seasons in Game Management Unit 2. This order is effective at 11:59 PM, December 21, 2018.

JUSTIFICATION: ADF&G and the U.S. Forest Service jointly set the regulatory year (RY) 2018 Game Management Unit (Unit) 2 wolf hunting and trapping harvest quota at 45 wolves. ADF&G currently manages Unit 2 wolves for an annual harvest that should not exceed 20 percent of the most recent unit-wide, fall population estimate. The RY 2017 harvest quota of 45 wolves is 20 percent of the fall 2017 population estimate (225 wolves). As of Tuesday evening, December 18, 2018, a total of 28 wolves taken in Unit 2 had been sealed. We anticipate that by the closure date additional harvest by hunters and trappers still in the field will reach or surpass the quota. Therefore, the state wolf hunting and trapping season is being closed by emergency order.
