A DVR Pre-ETS Summer Program
The 3rd annual Carpentry Boot Camp will be held again this summer at the Prince of Wales Vocational and Technical Education Center, August 19th-23rd. This one week, hands-on, immersion in basic carpentry skills provides students with limitations/disabilities the opportunity to explore a career in the construction trades.
Last year’s boot camp was attended by 12 students from Klawock, Craig and Hydaburg. Although some students were apprehensive in the beginning to run equipment like nail guns and circular saws, by mid-week big smiles could be seen beaming from faces from overcoming their fears and completing new tasks.
Professional builder and vocational instructor, Mike Cleary, brings real life workplace expectations to the camp. Students learn how to be safe around tools and have a chance to practice the soft skill of communication, team work, and critical thinking.
Hands on learning experiences, like the Carpentry Boot Camp, get students to start envisioning their lives after high school.
This year’s Carpentry Boot Camp will be in August 19th – 23rd.
