Kasaan's Teacher Housing Development Completed with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

The new Teacher Housing Duplex in Kasaan
Kasaan, Alaska—On Friday, May 17, 2019, the Organized Village of Kasaan (OVK) and the Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority (THRHA) celebrated the completion of the Kasaan Teacher Housing Development with a special ribbon cutting ceremony.

“The new duplex will provide much needed housing for teachers and Tribal citizens,” said Marina Anderson, OVK Vice President. “The housing will also enhance the sustainability of our community."

The housing development was originally launched on May 24, 2018. It was established in response to the challenges faced by teachers when seeking housing in the Southeast Island School District. Each three-bedroom unit is 1,300 square feet and was built to a six-star energy rating.

“It is a crisis when communities cannot attract and retain qualified teachers due to a lack of adequate or affordable housing,” said Jackie Pata, THRHA President & CEO. “The Housing Authority is committed to addressing these challenges and finding housing solutions in Southeast Alaska.”

The project was funded by Alaska Housing Finance Corporation’s Teacher, Health Professional & Public Safety Professional Housing Program as well as with funding from the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act. OVK owns the land the duplex was built upon and will retain ownership while THRHA will manage the property.
