Location: Ketchikan

Type: Fail To Record Finfish

On 7-8-2019 the Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited James Hayden (42) of Montana for allowing a non-resident juvenile to fail to log a Ling Cod on his harvest record card immediately after landing the fish. This offense has a set bait of $120 and does not require an appearance in the First Judicial District Court at Prince of Wales.

Type: Escape Mechanism Violation

On 6/30/19, Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Prince of Wales Island located and seized three dungy pots in the Klawock Inlet that did not have the biodegradable escape mechanism as required by regulation. Investigation showed that the pots were being fished by Peter Balasky, age 79 of Florida. Balasky was later located and cited for the violation, and the pots were returned.

Type: Warrant Arrest

On 7/9/2019 at approximately 1700 hours, the Alaska State Troopers contacted 42 year old Mitchel H. Carle of Hydaburg at a location near mile 11 of the Hollis - Klawock Highway. Carle was wanted on a outstanding $5,000.00 warrant for failure to serve jail time. Carle was arrested without incident and was remanded at the Craig jail on the warrant.

On 07/09/2019 at about 2117 hours, the Alaska State Troopers contacted and arrested Rosie Chesterton, age 28 of Ketchikan in the 1700 Block of South Tongass Highway. The original charge was VCOR. Chesterton was transported and remanded to Ketchikan Correctional Center with bail set at $1,000.

Type: MVC-MotorCycle-Injury

On 07/09/2019 at about 1611 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received multiple reports of a Motor Vehicle Collision involving a Motorcycle at Mile 3 of the South Tongass Highway. Investigation revealed that Robert Young, age 30 of Ketchikan was operating a blue 2007 Yamaha Motorcycle northbound on the South Tongass Highway when he lost control of the motorcycle, drove off the roadway striking a mailbox and then ultimately hitting a parked vehicle. Young was trapped underneath the parked vehicle. South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department responded and was able to free Young from underneath the vehicle. Young was transported to Peace Health Ketchikan Medical Center and later medevaced to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Young was reported in stable condition but suffered serious injuries. Case is under investigation. Preliminary investigation reveals that Speed appears to be a factor. AST would like to thank South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department for their fast response and assistance.

Type: Aircraft Collision - Fatality

On July 11, 2019 at approximately 1507 hours, Ketchikan Flight Service notified the Alaska State Troopers of an overdue aircraft. Investigation revealed that Michael Nash, age 68 of Wrangell, was the pilot and single occupant of his private PA-24 single engine, wheeled, Comanche aircraft. He was due to land in Ketchikan at about 1415 hours but as of 1500 hours had not arrived. Aircraft in the area of Judy Hill reported picking up the aircraft on radar. The US Coast Guard, Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad, Alaska Wildlife Troopers and Saxman VPSO responded to the area of Judy Hill. At 1640 hours, KVRS notified AST that they had located the crash on land on the north side of Judy Hill. The pilot was found deceased inside the aircraft at about 400 feet elevation. NOK and SME were notified.

Type: Fail to Complete Saltwater Charter Logbook

On 7/11/2019, Larry Jackson, 51 of Ketchikan, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, for failing to complete his Saltwater Charter Logbook prior to the deployment of gear. Jackson was contacted on the marine waters near Clover Pass while providing a guided sport fishing charter. Bail is set at $220 in the Ketchikan District Court.

Type: Burglary II, Theft III

On 7-12-19 at approximately 0859 hours, the Alaska State Trooper in Ketchikan were notified of a theft. Investigation revealed that between 7-11-19 and 7-12-19, unknown person(s) entered an unsecured residential workshop and removed miscellaneous tools with an estimated value of $500.00. Type: Fail to seal black bear in GMU 1 within 30 days

On 7/12/2019, William Hink, 30 of Ketchikan, was issued a citation by the Alaska Wildlife Trooper, Ketchikan Post, for failing to seal a black bear in GMU 1 within 30 days. The violation has a set $120.00 bail in the Ketchikan District Court
