On August 14, 2021, the Alaska State Troopers in Ketchikan were notified of an overdue boater by the US Coast Guard. A preliminary investigation revealed that 52-year-old Ketchikan resident Derek Kelley was planning on spending time at his remote cabin on the Unuk River, however, Derek failed to return to Ketchikan as previously planned. The Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad (KVRS) responded to the area and during aerial searches, Derek was located deceased near Grant Creek. The KVRS boat team responded to the area and recovered his remains. Next of kin has been notified, and Derek’s remains are being sent to the State Medical Examiner for further review.
