Petersburg Post Office Shuts Down Because of Leaked Mercury

From KFSK:

The following is a statement from the U.S. Postal Service following the closure of the Post Office:

The U.S. Postal Service has implemented an emergency suspension of the Petersburg, AK, Post Office due to a hazardous material incident. On Sept. 13, it was determined that a package inside the facility had leaked mercury. While the amount of mercury is not considered to be serious, the safety and security of our employees, customers and the mailstream is a top priority for the Postal Service. Out of an abundance of caution, we are temporarily suspending operations at the Petersburg Post Office until the facility is deemed safe to reoccupy. It is anticipated retail and Post Office Box operations will resume by the weekend. The Postal Service apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates your patience.
