Al Gross Running for US Senate

POW Report was able to reach out to candidate Al Gross who is running for US Senate against Dan Sullivan. Below is his bio.

Born and raised in Juneau, Al is a lifelong Alaskan with deep roots in this state. Al’s teenage years were shaped by a greater vision for Alaska’s future. His father, Avrum Gross, was Attorney General for Governor Jay Hammond, the father of the Alaska permanent fund and our beloved dividend. Al’s mother, Shari, was the first Executive Director of the United Fishermen of Alaska.

Al started commercial fishing when he was 14 and had 3 boats before his first car. He fished all across the state in 5 different fisheries and put himself through college and medical school and continues to commercial fish today. After his medical training he returned home to Juneau as an orthopedic surgeon, with his wife Monica, a pediatrician. Together they raised four great kids while balancing their careers in medicine. Al has practiced orthopedic surgery in Southeast for over 25 years and continues to practice part time in Petersburg. He is also an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

Al left his successful surgical practice in Juneau in 2013 to go back to school for a master's degree in public health because he knew Alaska’s current healthcare system was causing immense economic problems, both for the state government and its people, and has been working to fix it. He wants new job creation in Alaska, and an end to the recession, and knows that fixing healthcare is a critical part of that. He also volunteers regularly teaching joint replacement and reconstructive surgery at a pediatric orthopedic hospital in Cambodia. Al and Monica currently live in Anchorage.
