Location: Prince of Wales Island

Type: Buoy marking and escape mechanism violations

On 10/9/19, Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Prince of Wales Island located seven dungy pots while on patrol in the marine waters of Thorne Bay. The pots were attached to buoys that were improperly marked, and one of the pots had improper escape rings. Investigation revealed that the pots were being fished by Alvin McLeod, age 66 of Louisiana. McLeod was issued citations for improper buoy markings and escape rings.

Type: Fail to register for commercial sea cucumber

On 10-14-2019 the Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Daniel Marsden, 41 of Metlakatla, for failing to register his vessel with the Department of Fish and Game before participating in the commercial sea cucumber fishery. This is a strict liability commercial fishing offense that requires a mandatory appearance in the First Judicial Court in Ketchikan.

On October 17, 2019 at approximately 0808 hrs, Alaska State Troopers contacted 24-year-old Aaron Guthrie of Ketchikan near 2.5 mile of S. Tongass Highway after he had driven his vehicle off the roadway and into the ditch. Subsequent investigation revealed Guthrie was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcoholic beverages. Guthrie was taken into custody and transported to the Ketchikan Correctional Center, where he was remanded on the misdemeanor offense of driving under the influence. Guthrie was also cited for driving without a valid license.

Type: Commercial Geoduck Overage

On 10/18/2019, Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Ketchikan issued a citation to Donald Kambeitz, 53 of Craig, for delivering an overage of commercial taken geoduck during the October 9th fishing period. Kambeitz was given a mandatory court appearance in the District Court in Ketchikan. All fishermen are reminded that any geoduck retained as personal use must be taken from the harvest limit and that any overages are property of the State.

Type: Robbery 1st/Assault 3rd/ Criminal Mischief 5th

On 10/15/19, Ketchikan Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a possible assault with a gun in Naukati. On 10/16/19, Prince of Wales AWT responded to Naukati and conducted an investigation. During the investigation, it was revealed Daniel Ray Porter (40 y/o) of Naukati committed the crimes of Robbery 1st,Assault 3rd, and Criminal Mischief 5th. He was unable to be located during the investigation. On 10/17/19 Prince of Wales District Court issued a warrant for Porter’s arrest with bail set at $25,000. On 10/18/19 at 1730 hours, Porter was located at a residence in Klawock and taken into custody without incident. He was remanded to the Craig Jail.

Type: No Crewmember License / Employ Unlicensed Crewmember

On 10/19/2019, Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Ketchikan issued citations to David Vest, 43 of Ketchikan, for commercial fishing without a valid crewmember license in his possession and Bradley Haynes, 40 of Ketchikan, for employing a crewmember without a valid crewmember license. The investigation started when AWT was notified by officers with the National Marine Fisheries Service who contacted Vest and Haynes during a commercial fish offload in Ketchikan on 10/15/2019. Both citations have a set bail of $270.00.
