Craig Senior Citizen/Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption

[Editor:] I have been hard on the City of Craig with many hard hitting editorials and articles in the past years...and I have to commend the city for this exemption. I have no way of proving if EVERY city in the country makes such an exemption (I believe they don't), I want to commend the mayor and the city council and the administration for doing a service like this for our elders.

I was talking to a friend of mine, who grew up in Seattle and recounted a story of his silent generation neighbor who built a house in the '50's on a cliff for 30$K which is now worth 500$K and told me how because of inflation he had to now pay property taxes on a house he could NOT afford on his retirement despite building it with his own hands. It's a sad state of affairs and something that we have all heard a story about.

Point being, Craig is a rarity and Alaska is a rare-jewel that still respects its citizens. If the state of Alaska budget has any warnings to tell, it's that, governments are going through a fiscal crisis nation wide. The fact that Craig (and others) are making exemptions for people THAT NEED EXCEPTIONS is something that we should be grateful for. So next time you see your local council representative, thank them.

Now is the time to apply for your property tax exemption!
