Troopers contacted Michael Howard (34Y/O) while performing proactive patrols around the Whipple Creek area. After an investigation revealed Michael was in possession of controlled substances he was arrested and remanded to Ketchikan Correctional Center


Location: Prince of Wales

Type: Death Investigation

Dispatch Text:

On 11/16/2020 at 1713 hours, Prince of Wales State Troopers responded to Makenzie Logging Camp for a reported death. Investigation revealed 58-year-old Jerry White of Oregon was found deceased near his bunkhouse. His remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for determination of the cause of death, but foul play is not suspected. Next of kin have been notified.

On 11/17/2020 at 0350 hours, Prince of Wales State Troopers were notified of a deceased male on the roadway near Coffman Cove. Preliminary investigation revealed 62-year-old Kenneth Page of Coffman Cove was involved in a motor vehicle collision, (MVC) near 1 mile of the Coffman Cove Road. After the accident, Page self-extricated himself from the vehicle but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away. Next of kin have been notified and the investigation is on-going.

Troopers were contacted at approximately 0540 on November 19th for a report of a physical assault on Higgins Spur Road. Troopers responded to the reported location and found the suspect had left prior to Law Enforcement arrival. After investigating further and interviewing parties that were still present, Troopers were able to locate the suspect, James Cannon (50Y/O) at a nearby residence. James was found severely impaired and was subsequently arrested on two counts of Assault 4 with Domestic Violence. Prior to being remanded at KCC James was taken to KCH for medical clearance due to intoxication.

On 11/20/2020 at about 1610 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a report from a concerned citizen of a male passed out inside a vehicle in the parking lot of Rotary Beach on the South Tongass Highway.  AWT and AST responded to the location to conduct a welfare check on the person.  AST contacted John Haines, age 28 of Ketchikan.  Haines was arrested for Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the 4th Degree after he was found to be in possession of non-prescribed prescription medication and drug paraphernalia.  Haines was remanded to Ketchikan Correctional Center with No Bail.  AST would like to thank the concerned citizen who reported the incident to AST.

On 11/21/2020 at 0843 hours Alaska State Troopers in Ketchikan were made aware of a report of a capsized boat in the Tongass Narrows between Pennock Island and the Saxman Seaport. Troopers responded to the area of the Saxman Seaport to assist responding US Coast Guard personnel with the search. Upon arrival to the Saxman Seaport a vessel operated by a good Samaritan had just arrived at the seaport with eight individuals that confirmed that their boat had just capsized.

Investigation revealed that the capsized boat, a 16’ skiff, had departed Pennock Island this morning en route to Ketchikan. The weather at the time was 38 degrees, heavy rain with 35-40 mph winds. While crossing the Narrows, the boat capsized about 150 yards from shore with all on board wearing personal floatation devices. Several good Samaritans responded to the scene and removed all eight from the water. The eight were then transported to shore aboard a vessel operated by a good Samaritan. EMS arrived at the dock and transported all to the PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center as a precaution with no reported injuries.

On November 11, 2020, Alaska Wildlife Troopers working in conjunction with USFS Officers and the P/V Enforcer, cited 36-year-old Jessica Freeman of Ketchikan for Shooting from the Roadway in game management unit 1.  Shooting from the roadway carries a penalty of a $320.00 fine.

On November 8, 2020, Alaska Wildlife Troopers working in conjunction with USFS Officers and the P/V Enforcer, cited 56-year-old John Cope of Washington for Shooting from the Roadway in game management unit 2.  Shooting from the roadway carries a penalty of a $320.00 fine.

Type: Take Game w/ Artificial Light

On November 10, 2020, Alaska Wildlife Troopers working in conjunction with the P/V Enforcer and USFS Officers, cited 66-year-old Richard Summers of Prince of Wales Island for Taking Big Game (Deer) with Artificial Light in game management unit 2.  Summers was issued an Alaska Uniform Citation and provided a court date of December 2, 2020 to appear before the Klawock Court for the offense.

On November 10, 2020, Alaska Wildlife Troopers working in conjunction with USFS Officers and the P/V Enforcer, cited 74-year-old Gary Muehlberger of Prince of Wales Island for Misconduct involving Weapons in the fourth degree, in game management unit 2.  Muehlberger was issued an Alaska Uniform Citation and provided a court date of December 2, 2020 to appear before the Klawock Court for the offense.

Type: Take Big Game with Artificial Light / No Deer Tags in Possession

On November 7, 2020, Alaska Wildlife Troopers working in conjunction with USFS Officers and the P/V Enforcer, cited 34-year-old Jeffery Sheakley of Prince of Wales Island for taking big game (deer) with artificial light and hunting without deer tags in possession in game management unit 2.  Sheakley was issued an Alaska Uniform Citation and provided a court date of December 16, 2020 to appear before the Klawock Court for the offense of taking big game (deer) with artificial light.  The citation for not having deer tags in possession carries a $170.00 fine.

On November 07, 2020, Alaska Wildlife Troopers working in conjunction with the P/V Enforcer and USFS Officers, cited 45-year-old Howard Wolcott and 56-year-old Jonathan Rowan of Klawock for Shooting from the Roadway in game management unit 2.  Shooting from the roadway carries a penalty of a $320.00 fine.

Type: No Hunting License or Deer Tags

On November 12, 2020, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, cited 30-year-old Ryan Fitzgerald of Craig for not having a hunting license or deer harvest tags while harvesting a deer in game management unit 2.  Both violations carry a penalty of a $440.00 fine.
