Run Forecasts and Harvest Projections for 2021 Alaska Salmon Fisheries

And Review of the 2020 Season Published

(Juneau) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) announces publication of the statewide report [see the pdf below].

The Alaska all-species salmon harvest for 2020 totaled 118.3 million fish. Over half of this harvest was composed of pink salmon (60.7 million fish), followed by sockeye salmon (46.4 million fish). Most of the 2020 pink salmon harvest occurred in the Central and Westward regions, and Bristol Bay continued to be the largest sockeye salmon producing region in Alaska.

The 2021 commercial salmon forecast is for a robust harvest of sockeye salmon (46.6 million fish), and a substantially larger harvest of pink salmon (124.2 million fish) than occurred in 2020. Commercial harvests of coho and chum salmon are projected to be average. If realized, the 2021 forecasted commercial harvest of 190.1 million salmon will be substantially larger than the harvest of 2020, mostly due to the projected harvest of pink salmon.
