Trooper Report Week of August 1st and Update on Ketchikan Plane Crash

 


Location: Petersburg

Type: Commercial Fish--Conviction

On 7/27/21, in the Petersburg District Court, Orion Fenner age 39 of Petersburg, plead guilty to one count of Commercial Gillnet Closed Waters.  The conviction is the result of an Alaska Wildlife Trooper investigation that showed Fenner, the permit holder aboard the F/v  Commando, commercially fished in the closed waters of Frederick Sound near Petersburg on 6/29/20.  Fenner was sentenced to pay fines of $15,000 with $10,000 suspended, pay restitution of $5957, forfeit additional fish in his possession, and placed on probation for two years.

Type: Death Investigation

On July 28, 2021, at approximately 1430 hours AST on Prince of Wales Island received a report that Greg Wonders, age 65 of Thorne Bay, was found deceased in his residence by his neighbor. AST’s investigation revealed Wonders had passed away due to natural causes. Next of kin is out of state and has been notified.

Type: Death Investigation

On July 30, 2021 at approximately 0300 hours, AST on Prince of Wales Island received a report from the village of Hydaburg that Bertram Nathan, age 67 of Hydaburg, was found deceased in his residence. AST responded and conducted a brief investigation. Nathan had passed due to natural causes. Next of Kin has been notified.


Location: Ketchikan

Type: Sport fish without a license

On 8-1-2021 the Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Travis Kemp-Davis (20), of Ketchikan, for sport fishing in the waters of Ketchikan Creek without a valid 2021 sport fishing license.  This violation carries at set bail/fine of $220 and does not require a court appearance in the First Judicial District Court in Ketchikan.

Type: Death Investigation/Logging Accident

On August 5, 2021, at approximately 0715 hours, the Alaska State Troopers on Prince of Wales Island received a report of a commercial logging accident in the Ratz Bay area. AST, VPSOs, and USFS officers responded. Investigation determined a logger, Reginald Watt age 46 of Craig, was struck and killed by a log that had fallen off the top of the trailer while it was being loaded. The body is being transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage. Next of kin has been notified.

Type: Mutilate crab

On 8-2-2021 the Alaska Wildlife Troopers summonsed Erik Bolshakoff (43) of Ketchikan for mutilating Dungeness Crab.  Bolshakoff was contacted returning to port with unprocessed Dungeness Crab that no longer had shells to determine the legal size.  This violation does not have a set bail/fine and requires a mandatory court appearance in the First Judicial District Court in Ketchikan.

Type: Fatal Aircraft Crash

UPDATE: On 8/7/21, at about 1345 hours, Alaska State Troopers and Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad personnel arrived at the crash site via a chartered Temsco helicopter.  The bodies were recovered and will be transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage. Next of kin have been notified. The NTSB assisted and will be investigating the cause of the crash.  

The names of the deceased are as follows:

Mark Henderson, age 69, of Napa, CA

Jacquelyn Komplin, age 60, of Napa, CA

Andrea McArthur, age 55, of Woodstock, GA

Rachel McArthur, age 20, of Woodstock, GA

Janet Kroll, age 77, of Mount Prospect, IL

Pilot- Rolf Lanzendorfer, age 64, of Washington

 

Original Release: On August 5, 2021, at approximately 1121 hours, the Alaska State Troopers were notified of a possible plane crash just outside of Ketchikan in the Misty Fjords area. Initial reports indicated that a Southeast Aviation De Haviland Beaver, with tail number N1249K, had five passengers and one pilot aboard and had reportedly triggered an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB.) The US Coast Guard, Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, US Forest Service, and volunteers from the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad responded to the area to attempt to locate the crash site. Poor visibility and deteriorating weather hampered aerial search efforts for part of the afternoon. At approximately 1437 hours, the US Coast Guard discovered the crash site in a steep mountainous area near Misty Fjords; all six occupants of the aircraft were deceased. The Alaska State Troopers and volunteers from the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad will coordinate recovery efforts of the deceased from the crash site today and tomorrow. The NTSB has been notified and will be investigating the cause of the crash.
