Obituary Joseph Raymond Carl

Joseph Raymond Carl, a longtime resident of Southeast Alaska, passed away Friday February 11th, 2022, in Ketchikan, Alaska, surrounded by family.

Joe was born in Park Rapids, Minnesota on May 13th, 1954, the first of 8 children to John Anthony Carl and Gloria Anna Swanson.

Joe graduated in 1973 from McMinnville High School. He followed his path of logging in Oregon until he made his journey to Alaska in 1982.

Joe married the love of his life, Debra Jeanne Proctor, on September 19th, 1981, in Clallan Bay, Washington. Joe and Debbie had two children Amber Carl of Oregon and Gerald Carl of Colorado. They had just celebrated their 42nd anniversary.

In 1982 Joe & Debbie moved from Washington to Big Salt, Alaska, a logging camp, located on Prince of Wales Island. He worked for various logging companies throughout his life, he was known to many as “Sloppy Joe.”

Joe loved his family most of all, he spent his lifetime with his children watching them grow and have children of their own. He taught us so much from loving the great outdoors to learning tomorrow was not guaranteed, make sure today is spent to the fullest, no regrets. He had a large family and many cousins growing up that he grew up with, he always had a great story about growing up, they never disappointed.

Joe’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, wood-working, oyster farming, logging, traveling(sometimes), and most of all doing spendingtime doing projects with his grandchildren. Joe retired in 2019 but anyone that knew him knew he could never sit still for long, he had many projects in the works before his death. He enjoyed camping, BBQ’s and spending time with friends, who he cared about deeply, you all meant so much to him.

Joe had three grandchildren, John Anthony Carl II 17 of Oregon, Dylan Joseph Carl (whom he shared a birthday with) 12 of Colorado and Josilyn Jeanne-Emmy Carl 2 of Oregon. These 3 kids were his pride and joy. He was proud of each one of them and loved them all so very much. He taught them all life long lessons and made so many memories.

Joe is survived by his wife Debra Carl, daughter Amber(Michel), son Gerald(Stephanie), grandchildren John, Dylan and Josilyn, Brother Douglas(Kerrie) and Sisters Mary, Susan, Joan and Patricia. He is proceeded in death by his parents John & Gloria Carl, brothers Johnny and Mark Carl, and Niece Amanda Stovall. Celebration of life to be in Alaska in May at Sarkar Lake and June 25th in Oregon.

We got it from here dad, fly high and keep an eye on us all.
