Klawock Businesses Donate to Build a Mortuary Facility

From the City of Klawock

The City of Klawock has been working on a grant to provide a temporary mortuary for our community members on Prince of Wales Island. At this time, the current holding mortuary is a modified shipping container at the Public Works lot in Craig. While we are grateful to the City of Craig for allowing our deceased community members to be held there when necessary, the City of Klawock would like to build a new holding facility which would include a walk-in cooler, metal transport caskets and an area where family members could wait near their deceased loved ones, as was custom for our communities. This will provide dignity and respect for our loved ones who are beginning their final journey before heading to Ketchikan for embalming or cremation.

When we started writing this grant, we reached out to local businesses and tribal organizations for letters of support or donations toward this project. To date we have received the following support and would like to recognize the following businesses for their generous donation:

$3,000 Melissa Lacour, Black Bear Store/Log Cabin Sporting Goods
$500 Klawock AC Store
$200 Wendy Hulstine, Raven Hair Design
$200 Kim McNish, Kim's Auto & Tire LLC

Gunalch'eesh, Haw'aa for your generous donations to this project.

Gunalch'eesh, Haw'aa to Wendy Hulstine who is setting up a donation jar toward this project for any customers of Raven Hair Design who would also like to donate. Your thoughtfulness is very much appreciated.
