KFD Responds to Hazardous Materials at PeaceHealth

KFD:

On Tuesday January 14, 2020 at 7:10 AM the City of Ketchikan Fire Department responded for a report of a Hazardous Materials incident at PeaceHealth located at 3100 Tongass Avenue.

Upon arrival personnel were presented with a small acid spill in the G.I. Lab. Hospital facilities staff had taken immediate action prior to Fire Department arrival to isolate the spill and identify the spilled material as acid. Members of the Ketchikan Hazardous Material Team entered the area of the spill and confirmed the product did not migrate out of the room where the spill occurred.

The cause of the spill was attributed to a failure in a piece of equipment used for the sterilization of medical surgical equipment. Hazardous Material Team members donning specialized HazMat suits entered the room and secured the equipment, abating any further release of acid. The equipment and materials exposed to the acid were placed in a specialized container rendering the room safe for further clean-up and use.

No interruption of hospital services occurred as a result of this incident.

Three hospital employees were being evaluated for exposure to fumes with no injuries to first responders.

Fire Department operations concluded at 9:30 AM.
