Salmon Harvest Update #10

The cumulative 2020 salmon harvest is expected to exceed 100 million fish this week. An improved pink salmon harvest contrasts with continued weakness in keta and coho landings.

About 370,000 sockeye were harvested last week with Kodiak producing roughly half the total. Another 100,000 sockeye came from the AK Pen. & Aleutian Islands region, in addition to production from Southeast, Bristol Bay, Cook Inlet, and PWS.

Nearly 47 million pinks have been harvested YTD, 30% and 37% ahead of 2018 and 2016, respectively. Last week’s statewide harvest of more than 12 million pinks was the strongest weekly harvest of the season for the species. PWS has contributed about 43% of the statewide total with landings nearly identical to 2018. Kodiak topped its preseason harvest projection by about four million fish with YTD production of nearly 16 million pinks. Harvests in AK Pen. & Aleutian Islands and Cook Inlet are ahead of 2018 and longer-term averages. Southeast’s pink catch is down 31% from 2018 and well below historical levels.

The average weight of pink salmon in 2020 for most major harvest areas are consistent with the 10-year average. Fish from AK Pen & Aleutian Islands are the exception. Pinks from the region have averaged 2.75 pounds in 2020, lower than the 10-year average of 3.13 pounds.

The YTD harvest of keta continues to lag more than 10 million fish (67%) below the 5-year average. Keta harvests in all areas are behind 2019 and the 5-year average.

Coho landings are 51% lower than 2019 and 63% lower than the 5-year average. There is still time to see improvement — historical data indicates peak harvest for the species is late-August/early-September. Chinook landings are generally behind 2019 with the exclusion of Southeast.
